The Challenge of Converting WAM
In the United States, scoring a 90% is often required to get an 'A' grade (4.0). In Australia, scoring an 80% is widely considered an exceptional mark, earning a High Distinction (HD) or a First Class Honours equivalent.
Because of this severe difference in grading strictness, you cannot simply look at a US GPA chart and convert an Australian 75% to a US 'C' grade. Doing so will drastically misrepresent your academic standing to US institutions.
Standard Evaluation Metrics (WES / Fulbright)
Credential evaluation services like World Education Services (WES) generally recognize the rigor of the Australian grading system. The accepted international standard generally maps:
- High Distinction (80-85%+): US 'A' Grade (4.0)
- Distinction (75-79%): US 'A-' or 'A' Grade (~3.7 to 4.0)
- Credit (65-74%): US 'B' Grade (~3.0 to 3.3)
- Pass (50-64%): US 'C' Grade (~2.0 to 2.7)
*Disclaimer: This calculator uses widely accepted international credential evaluation benchmarks (such as those used by WES). However, every US university's admissions department has the right to evaluate your transcript using their own internal proprietary formulas.
