Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA): The Medical School Honor Society
The Residency Bloodbath
Getting into medical school is the hardest academic hurdle in the world. But once you are in, a terrifying realization sets in: You now have to compete against other medical students to get a job.
When medical students apply for their Residency (where they train in a specific specialty like Pediatrics or Surgery), they are evaluated by Residency Program Directors. If you want to match into a highly lucrative, highly competitive specialty (like Dermatology, Orthopedic Surgery, or Plastic Surgery), you essentially must be inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA).
What is AOA?
Alpha Omega Alpha is the national medical honor society.Unlike undergraduate honor societies, AOA is incredibly small. Only about 16% to 20% of a graduating medical school class is elected to AOA.
Selection is based on:
The AOA Filter
Residency Program Directors receive thousands of applications for 3 available spots. To filter the pile, many elite surgical residencies apply an automatic digital filter: "AOA Only."If you are not AOA, your application is literally hidden from the director's screen.
For highly competitive specialties, nearly 50% of successfully matched applicants are AOA members. If you want to be a Pediatrician, AOA doesn't matter much. But if you want to be a Neurosurgeon, AOA is your golden ticket.
Note: In recent years, a massive debate has sparked over whether AOA is equitable, and some medical schools (like Harvard) have abolished their AOA chapters entirely to reduce student stress. But for the vast majority of medical students, AOA remains the ultimate prize.
