HOPE vs. Zell Miller 2026: The Exact GPA and SAT Scores You Need in Georgia

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Free Tuition Promise

If you are a high school student in Georgia, the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships are your golden ticket. Funded by the Georgia Lottery, these merit-based scholarships pay for a massive portion (or all) of your tuition at in-state public colleges and universities.

However, the requirements are strict, and the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) does not use the GPA printed on your high school transcript.

Here are the exact, updated requirements for the 2026 graduating class.

1. The HOPE Scholarship Requirements

The standard HOPE Scholarship covers a percentage of standard tuition (which varies slightly by institution, but is incredibly generous).
  • High School GPA Required: 3.0 Cumulative HOPE GPA
  • Test Scores: None required.
  • College Maintenance: Once you are in college, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative postsecondary GPA at specific checkpoints (30, 60, and 90 attempted hours) to keep the money.
  • 2. The Zell Miller Scholarship Requirements

The Zell Miller Scholarship is the elite tier. It covers 100% of standard undergraduate tuition at eligible public colleges.
  • High School GPA Required: 3.7 Cumulative HOPE GPA
  • Test Scores Required: A minimum of 1200 on the SAT (Math and Reading only) in a single sitting, OR a 26 composite on the ACT.
  • Alternative:* If you are the Valedictorian or Salutatorian of your graduating class, you automatically qualify for Zell Miller, regardless of your test scores.
  • College Maintenance: You must maintain a much stricter 3.3 cumulative postsecondary GPA in college to keep Zell Miller. If you drop below 3.3 but stay above 3.0, you are bumped down to the standard HOPE Scholarship.
  • The "HOPE GPA" Math Trap

The most common mistake Georgia students make is assuming they qualify for HOPE because their high school transcript shows a 3.2 GPA.

The GSFC calculates a specific HOPE GPA. They only count core academic courses: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language. If you got an 'A' in weightlifting or an 'A' in art class, those grades are completely deleted from the HOPE calculation.

Furthermore, the HOPE GPA is strictly unweighted on a 4.0 scale, with one major exception: they add a 0.5 bonus to AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment courses, but they cap the maximum grade at a 4.0. (Meaning, if you get an 'A' in AP Biology, it is a 4.0, not a 4.5. But if you get a 'B' in AP Biology, the 0.5 boost turns it into a 3.5).

    The Rigor Requirement

You cannot just take the easiest classes to protect your GPA. For the Class of 2026, you must pass at least four rigorous courses (such as AP, IB, Dual Enrollment, or advanced math/science classes like Physics or Pre-Calculus) to be eligible for either scholarship.
