PharmCAS GPA Requirements: How to Get Into Pharmacy School in 2026

The Golden Era of Pharmacy Admissions

For decades, getting into a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program was brutally competitive, requiring a 3.6 GPA and elite scores on the PCAT.

Today, the landscape has completely flipped. Due to market saturation in retail pharmacy and a massive decline in national applications, pharmacy schools are actively fighting to fill their seats.

The PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test) was officially retired in 2024. Admissions are now entirely dependent on your PharmCAS (Pharmacy College Application Service) GPA.

The Current PharmCAS Averages

Because applications are down, the GPA required to secure an acceptance has dropped significantly.

Elite Programs (e.g., UCSF, UNC): Still demand a ~3.5 Cumulative GPA.

Mid-Tier State Programs: Average accepted GPA is hovering around a 3.2 to 3.3.

Newer Private Programs: Many will accept students with a 2.8 to 3.0 GPA, provided they have passed all prerequisite sciences.

If you have a 3.2 GPA, you are a highly competitive applicant for the vast majority of PharmD programs in the country.

The Prerequisite Trap

While the overall GPA requirements have softened, the prerequisite requirements remain absolute.

PharmD programs are heavy on organic chemistry and biochemistry. Through the PharmCAS system, programs will isolate your Math & Science GPA.

If you have a 3.4 overall GPA (padded by English and History), but you have 'C-' grades in Organic Chemistry I and II, the admissions committee will likely reject you. They know that a student who cannot master undergraduate Organic Chemistry will instantly fail out of the graduate-level medicinal chemistry required in the PharmD curriculum.

If you have 'C's in core chemistry classes, you must retake them for 'A's before submitting your PharmCAS application.
