Does Being a Legacy Override a Low GPA During Sorority Rush?

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Legacy Delusion

Your mother, your aunt, and your older sister were all members of Kappa Alpha Theta at your university. You are the ultimate legacy.

However, you struggled in high school. Your final GPA is a 2.65. The university's Panhellenic Council states that the absolute minimum GPA to participate in Rush is a 2.7, but you heard a rumor that chapters can "make exceptions" for important legacies.

You go through Rush, assuming you have a guaranteed bid. On Day 2, you are dropped by the chapter. Your mother is furious and calls the chapter president.

The chapter president tells her the brutal truth: "We couldn't take her. It's an insurance and nationals issue."

The Death of the Legacy Exemption

Twenty years ago, a sorority could manually bypass the GPA requirement for a powerful legacy. Today, they cannot.
  • National Bylaws: Almost every National Sorority Headquarters has cracked down on academic standards. If a local chapter extends a bid to a girl with a 2.65 when the National Bylaw explicitly states a 2.75 minimum, the National Headquarters will immediately void the bid and fine the chapter.
  • The End of Legacy Guarantees: Over the last five years, almost every major sorority (including Tri Delta, Phi Mu, and ADPi) has officially abolished their "Legacy Preferential Treatment" policies in an effort to make Rush more equitable. Being a legacy now is simply a nice conversation starter; it is no longer a legal shield.
  • The Liability of a Low GPA

Even if the chapter could bypass the rule, they don't want to. If they admit you with a 2.65, you are statistically highly likely to fail your freshman college classes. If your college GPA drops below a 2.0, you will be placed on academic probation, the chapter's overall GPA ranking on campus will tank, and you will become a massive financial liability (because girls on probation usually drop out and stop paying dues).

The Strategy: If you are a legacy with a bad high school GPA, do not attempt to rush as a freshman. Your legacy status will not save you from the algorithm. Go to college, get a 3.5 in your first semester, and rush as a sophomore.
