Is a 4.0 Unweighted Better Than a 4.5 Weighted?

The High School GPA Dilemma

It is the most common question asked by high school sophomores planning their next year's schedule: "Should I take an AP class and risk getting a B, or take the regular class and guarantee an A?"

This leads to the ultimate debate: Is a 4.0 Unweighted GPA better than a 4.5 Weighted GPA?

What Do Colleges Actually Look At?

Here is the blunt truth: Highly selective colleges care about both, but they care about Course Rigor the most.

When you apply to college, the admissions officer does not just look at your final number. They look at your entire transcript to see how you earned that number.

  • Scenario A (4.0 Unweighted): A student took zero AP or Honors classes, opting for the easiest electives available, and got straight A's.
  • Scenario B (4.5 Weighted / 3.8 Unweighted): A student took 8 AP classes. They got A's in most, but B's in AP Chemistry and AP Calculus.
  • Scenario B wins every single time.

    Why Course Rigor Matters

Admissions officers want to know that you are prepared for college-level academics. Taking AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment classes proves that you are willing to challenge yourself.

Getting a 'B' in an AP class tells the college that you pushed yourself to your intellectual limit. Getting an 'A' in regular physical science tells them nothing about your ability to handle a rigorous university curriculum.

    The Verdict

Do not protect your 4.0 Unweighted GPA by taking easy classes. Elite universities will explicitly recalculate your GPA to strip away easy electives, and they will penalize you for not taking advantage of the rigorous courses offered at your high school. Take the hardest classes you can realistically manage without burning out.
