Understanding Academic Standing in Canada

Canadian universities monitor your academic performance at the end of each academic term (or academic year). Your standing dictates whether you can continue your studies.

  • Good Standing: Your CGPA meets or exceeds the minimum requirement (often around 1.50 or 2.00 on a 4.0 scale, depending on your faculty).
  • Academic Probation: Your CGPA has fallen below the minimum requirement. You are allowed to continue studying, but usually with a restricted course load. You must raise your CGPA or your Term GPA above a specific threshold by your next review.
  • Required to Withdraw (RTW): If you fail to meet the conditions of your probation, you may be suspended or required to withdraw from the university for 1-3 years.

Critical Advice: If you are at risk of RTW, contact your academic advisor immediately. They can help you with late withdrawals, course retakes, or academic appeals.
