How is Canadian CGPA Calculated?
Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the weighted average of all your courses taken across all semesters.
The Math:CGPA = Total Grade Points Earned ÷ Total Credits Attempted
Note on Credits: While many US universities use a 3-credit system for a standard one-semester course, Canadian universities vary:
- Many schools (like UBC or McGill) use 3 credits for a half-year course and 6 credits for a full-year course.
- Schools like UofT use Full Course Equivalents (FCE), where a half-year course is 0.5 FCE and a full-year is 1.0 FCE.
- This calculator works perfectly regardless of the credit system you use, as long as you are consistent!
Academic Standing Thresholds
While specific numbers vary by scale, here are the general Canadian standards (normalized to a 4.0 scale):
| Standing | Approx. CGPA (4.0 Scale) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Dean's List / First Class | 3.70 - 4.00 | Top honors, highly competitive for scholarships and top-tier grad schools. |
| Good Standing | 3.00 - 3.69 | Solid academic performance, meets most standard Master's program minimums. |
| Satisfactory | 2.00 - 2.99 | Passing, but may not be high enough for competitive post-graduate programs. |
| Probationary | 1.50 - 1.99 | At risk. You may be placed on academic probation. |
| RTW Risk | < 1.50 | High risk of being Required to Withdraw from your program. |
