Canadian GPA Scales Explained

Unlike the US system, Canadian universities use several different GPA scales. It is crucial to select the correct scale for your specific institution when calculating your GPA.

4.0 Scale (Most Common)

Used by UBC, McGill, Simon Fraser, and many others. Similar to the US system, but percentage thresholds for letter grades may vary.

4.3 Scale

Used by the University of Toronto, Concordia University, Dalhousie University, and others. This scale introduces an A+ grade worth 4.3 or 4.33 points, rewarding exceptional performance above a standard A.

9.0 Scale

Used by York University, University of Victoria, and a few others. On this scale, an A+ is a 9, an A is an 8, a B+ is a 7, and so on.

12.0 Scale

Used by McMaster University and Carleton University. On this scale, an A+ is a 12, an A is an 11, an A- is a 10, a B+ is a 9, etc.
