Frequently Asked Questions

You cannot simply divide a 9.0 scale GPA by 2.25. You must convert each individual course grade from York or UVic's 9.0 scale into its corresponding percentage or letter grade, and then re-calculate those grades using a standard 4.0 scale. Our converter above automates this complex estimation for you.
Most US universities will accept a Canadian 4.0 or 4.33 scale GPA at face value without conversion. However, if you are applying through centralized US application systems (like AMCAS for medical school or LSAC for law school), they will forcibly re-calculate your Canadian grades using their own specific US GPA conversion tables.
A perfect 4.33 GPA (an A+ average) usually caps out at a 4.0 when converting to a standard 4.0 scale, because the 4.0 scale does not award any extra points for A+ grades above an A.

Neither is inherently 'better,' they are just different university measurement systems. However, a 4.33 scale technically allows students to offset lower grades by achieving A+ grades (worth extra points), whereas a 4.0 scale strictly caps the maximum reward for any grade at 4.0.
