The Sperrkonto Reality: Why You Need €11,208 in Cash Upfront
The Hidden Price of Free Education
"Study in Germany for free!" is the greatest marketing slogan in international education. While it is true that public universities do not charge tuition fees, the German government is absolutely ruthless about ensuring you do not become a burden on their welfare system.
To prove you can survive without government assistance, every single non-EU international student must open a Sperrkonto (Blocked Account) before they can even apply for a student visa.
What is a Sperrkonto?
A Sperrkonto is a special German bank account designed to lock up your money.
You cannot just show the embassy a bank statement showing you have money in your Indian, American, or Nigerian bank account. You must literally wire the cash to a German institution, where it is frozen.
The Magic Number: €11,208
As of late 2024 (and adjusting periodically with inflation), the German government requires you to have €934 per month to cover rent, food, and health insurance.
For a standard 1-year visa, you must deposit 12 months' worth of funds: 12 months × €934 = €11,208.
If you do not have a PDF certificate proving this exact amount is sitting frozen in a German bank, your visa will be instantly rejected at the embassy.
How the 'Blocking' Actually Works
Once you arrive in Germany and activate your blocked account, the bank will not let you touch the €11,208 at once.
The account is literally "blocked." The bank will only release exactly €934 into your regular checking account (Girokonto) every month.
The Buffer Trap
When transferring your money from your home country to the German blocked account provider (like Fintiba, Coracle, or Expatrio), you must factor in massive exchange rate fluctuations and international wire fees.
If you wire exactly €11,208, but the intermediary bank takes a €25 fee, only €11,283 arrives. The blocked account provider will refuse to issue your confirmation certificate because you are €25 short. You will have to do another expensive international wire just to send €25.
Always wire a "Buffer Amount" of an extra €100 to €200 to cover any hidden SWIFT fees or currency drops.
