EU Blue Card Salary Cutoffs: Are You Being Underpaid?

FastGPA Immigration Team

The Most Coveted Visa in Europe

The EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) is the holy grail of European immigration.

It grants you the right to work in Germany, bring your family with full working rights, move to other EU countries easily, and fast-track your Permanent Residency in as little as 21 months.

But you cannot just ask for a Blue Card. You must earn it mathematically through your Gross Annual Salary.

The Dual Salary Thresholds

When a German company offers you a job, the Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) looks at your contract. To issue a Blue Card, your salary must cross a strict government line.

Germany recently lowered these thresholds massively to attract more talent, but there are still two distinct categories:

1. The Standard Threshold If you work in a standard profession (e.g., Marketing Manager, HR Director, Financial Analyst), you must earn a minimum of €45,300 gross per year (As of 2024).

  • If the company offers you €44,000, you are rejected for the Blue Card. You will have to apply for a standard, highly restrictive work visa instead.
  • 2. The Shortage Occupation Threshold (Mangelberufe) Germany is desperate for specific workers. If you work in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or Human Medicine, you fall into a "Shortage Occupation."

  • For these elite fields, the government lowers the required salary massively down to €41,041.80 gross per year (As of 2024).
  • If you are a Junior Software Developer and receive an offer for €42,000, you immediately get the Blue Card.
  • The 'New Graduate' Loophole

What if you don't work in STEM, but you still can't hit the €45,300 standard threshold?

Germany recently introduced a massive loophole for young professionals. If you graduated from university within the last 3 years, the government automatically applies the lower €41,041.80 threshold to you, regardless of what field you work in!

This means a fresh Marketing graduate earning €42k can now get a Blue Card, whereas a 35-year-old Marketing manager needs €45.3k.

    Beware the Probation Trap

When you get your Blue Card, it is tied to that specific employer for the first 12 months. If you are fired during your 6-month probation period (Probezeit), your Blue Card becomes invalid, and you must rapidly find a new job that meets the exact same salary thresholds, or you will be deported.

Use our EU Blue Card Calculator to ensure your job offer legally crosses the federal threshold before you sign the contract.
