How to Close Your Blocked Account After You Graduate

Breaking the Vault

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is designed to be virtually impossible to open. The German government does not want you pulling out the €11,208 to buy a car instead of paying your rent.

But what happens when the purpose of the blocked account no longer exists?

  • Scenario A (The Success): You graduate early, or you secure a massive full-time employment contract, meaning you no longer need a student visa.
  • Scenario B (The Exit): You drop out of university and decide to permanently leave Germany to return to your home country.
  • In both scenarios, you might still have thousands of euros locked in the Fintiba or Coracle vault. Here is how to legally shatter the glass and get your cash back.

    The Golden Rule: The Sperrfreigabe

Fintiba, Expatrio, and Coracle are legally forbidden from returning your money simply because you ask nicely.

The money is legally pledged to the Federal Republic of Germany. To unblock the remaining funds, you must secure a Sperrfreigabe (Release Authorization Document).

    Scenario A: Getting a Full-Time Job

If you drop out of your Master's because you landed a €60,000 software engineering job, you will transition from a Student Visa (16b) to an EU Blue Card or standard Work Visa.

When you go to the Ausländerbehörde (Immigration Office) to process this visa change, you must bring a printed letter asking them for a Sperrfreigabe.

Because your new full-time salary is your new "Proof of Funds," the immigration officer will gladly stamp your release document. You upload this stamped PDF to Fintiba, and the remaining balance is instantly wired to your normal checking account.

    Scenario B: Leaving Germany Forever

If you hate Germany, drop out, and book a one-way flight back to India or the US, do not just leave the country and assume you can email Fintiba later.

If you leave Germany without a Sperrfreigabe, your money is trapped in purgatory.

Before you go to the airport, you must do two things:

  • Abmeldung (De-registration): Go to the city hall (Bürgeramt) and officially de-register your address. This proves you are abandoning your German residency.
  • The Immigration Office: Take your Abmeldung and your one-way flight ticket to the Ausländerbehörde. Because you are officially terminating your residence permit and leaving the country, they will issue the Sperrfreigabe.
  • Upload the document to your provider, give them your home country's IBAN (e.g., your Indian or US bank account), and they will wire the remaining funds back home (minus standard international wire fees).

Never leave Germany without de-registering. It will lock up your blocked funds and create massive tax liabilities. Use our Blocked Account Calculator to track exactly how much capital you currently have trapped in the system.
