How to Unblock Your Sperrkonto When You Arrive in Germany

FastGPA Financial Team

The First Week Cash Crisis

Thousands of international students make a terrifying mistake during their first week in Germany.

They wire their entire life savings (€11,208) into their Fintiba or Expatrio blocked account. They fly to Germany with only €50 in their wallet, assuming they can just withdraw their blocked money at the airport.

You cannot touch your blocked money immediately.

Your €11k is sitting in a locked vault. To turn the key and release the first €934 payout, you must complete a strict bureaucratic obstacle course. Here is exactly how to unblock your money.

Step 1: The City Registration (Anmeldung)

Your blocked account provider will not release your money until they have absolute legal proof that you have permanently arrived in Germany.

The only document they accept is the Meldebescheinigung (City Registration Certificate).

  • You must secure a permanent apartment or WG room.
  • You must get a signed "Wohnungsgeberbestätigung" (Landlord Confirmation) from your landlord.
  • You take this to the local Bürgeramt (City Hall) to register your address.
  • They print a piece of paper (Meldebescheinigung) proving you live there.
  • The Problem: In massive cities like Berlin or Munich, getting an appointment at the Bürgeramt can take 3 to 6 weeks. During this time, your money remains blocked.

Step 2: Open a Regular Checking Account (Girokonto)

Fintiba, Coracle, and Expatrio are NOT normal banks. They do not issue debit cards. You cannot buy groceries with a blocked account.

You must open a standard German checking account (Girokonto) at a real bank (like N26, Sparkasse, or Deutsche Bank).

The Problem: To open a regular German bank account, most banks require you to show... your City Registration Certificate (Anmeldung).

    Step 3: Connect the Accounts

Once you have your Anmeldung and your regular Girokonto IBAN:

  • Open your Fintiba/Expatrio app.
  • Upload a scan of your Anmeldung.
  • Upload a scan of your German student visa (or entry stamp).
  • Enter your new Girokonto IBAN.
  • Once verified (takes 1-3 days), the provider will trigger the "Activation." They will finally wire your first €934 payout into your standard Girokonto, and you can buy groceries.

    The Survival Buffer

Because of the massive delays in getting an Anmeldung appointment and opening a bank account, it can easily take 3 to 5 weeks before your first €934 arrives.

Golden Rule: Always fly to Germany with at least €1,000 in cash or accessible on an international credit card to survive the first month of bureaucratic hell. Do not rely on your blocked account for your first month's rent deposit.

Use our Blocked Account Calculator to ensure you have budgeted the exact €11,208 required, separate from your survival cash.
