The Modified Bavarian Formula: Converting Your Indian CGPA
The Admissions Gateway
You have an 8.2 CGPA from an Indian university (which uses a 10-point scale). You want to apply for a Master's degree in Data Science at a German university, but the entry requirement states you need a "German 2.5 or better."
How do you know if your 8.2 is good enough?
You cannot just guess. German universities (and uni-assist, the centralized application portal) use a very specific mathematical equation called the Modified Bavarian Formula (Modifizierte Bayerische Formel).
The Exact Formula
The formula looks like this:
German Grade = 1 + 3 × [ (Nmax - Nd) / (Nmax - Nmin) ]
Where:
The 'Minimum Passing Grade' Trap
The most critical part of the Bavarian Formula is the Nmin (Lowest Passing Grade).
If you get this number wrong, your entire calculation will be wildly inaccurate.
If your university's minimum passing grade is a 5.0, your 8.2 CGPA converts to a 2.08 on the German scale (which is excellent, easily passing the 2.5 cutoff). However, if your university's minimum passing grade is a 4.0, your 8.2 CGPA converts to a 1.90 on the German scale (even better!).
Uni-Assist and Your Transcript
When you submit your application through uni-assist, the evaluating officer will look at the back of your official university transcript. They will explicitly look for the legend that states the "Maximum Grade" and the "Minimum Grade required to pass."
If your transcript does not clearly state the minimum passing grade, uni-assist will default to standard country averages, which can sometimes hurt your final conversion.
Stop doing the math by hand. Use our official Bavarian Formula Calculator to input your Nmax, Nmin, and Nd to see the exact decimal score uni-assist will assign you.
