The Anna University Multiplier Rule

If you are pursuing your B.E. or B.Tech under Anna University (or its affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu), calculating your percentage for campus placements is remarkably straightforward compared to other Indian universities.

Unlike VTU or Mumbai University which use complex subtraction or tiered formulas, Anna University uses a direct multiplier. However, you must be aware of which regulation you fall under.

The Official Anna University Formula

For students under the 2017 Regulation and the 2021 Regulation, Anna University has standardized the conversion formula.

The official formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 10

Yes, you read that correctly. For Anna University students, you simply multiply your CGPA by 10.

Examples of Anna Uni Conversion

  • If your CGPA is 8.5, your percentage is 85%.
  • If your CGPA is 7.23, your percentage is 72.3%.
  • If your CGPA is 6.9, your percentage is 69%.
  • The Danger: Why 6.9 is Not 70%

While the formula is easy, students frequently make the mistake of rounding up.

If a company (like TCS or Infosys) has a strict 70% cutoff for a premium role, and your CGPA is 6.95 (which equals 69.5%), you cannot round it up to 70% on your resume. HR systems are binary. A 69.9% is treated as a rejection if the hard cutoff is 70.0%.

You must write exactly what the multiplier outputs.

First Class vs. Distinction at Anna University

Anna University is notoriously strict about its degree classifications. Here are the cutoffs for your final degree:
  • First Class with Distinction: You must score an 8.5 CGPA or higher (85%+).
  • The Catch:* You must pass every single subject in your very first attempt. If you had even one arrear (backlog) during your 4 years, you are permanently disqualified from Distinction, even if you clear it immediately and finish with a 9.0 CGPA.
  • First Class: You must score a 6.5 CGPA or higher (65%+). You must complete the degree within the stipulated 4 years.
  • Second Class: Any passing CGPA below 6.5.
  • Check Your Overall CGPA First

Before you multiply by 10, you must ensure your CGPA is mathematically accurate. You cannot just average your 8 semesters of SGPA. You must factor in the credits of each subject.

Use our SGPA to CGPA Calculator to input your semester grades and credits. Once you have your true, credit-weighted CGPA, simply multiply it by 10 to get your Anna University percentage.
