The CBSE Grading System Explained

If you are an Indian high school student under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), you know that your marksheet doesn't always just give you a simple percentage. Depending on the year you graduated, you might receive grades (A1, B2) and a CGPA out of 10.

However, when you apply for JEE Mains, NEET, or college admissions (like Delhi University), they demand your exact Percentage.

Here is exactly how to calculate your CBSE CGPA and convert it to a percentage legally.

Step 1: Understanding CBSE Grade Points

CBSE assigns a Grade Point based on your marks range in each subject:
  • A1: 91-100 marks = 10 Points
  • A2: 81-90 marks = 9 Points
  • B1: 71-80 marks = 8 Points
  • B2: 61-70 marks = 7 Points
  • C1: 51-60 marks = 6 Points
  • C2: 41-50 marks = 5 Points
  • D: 33-40 marks = 4 Points
  • E1/E2: Below 33 = Fail
  • Step 2: Calculate Your Overall CGPA

To find your overall CGPA, you simply add up the grade points of your Top 5 subjects (excluding the 6th additional subject unless it replaces a failed core subject) and divide by 5.

    Example:

  • English: A1 (10)
  • Science: A2 (9)
  • Math: B1 (8)
  • Social Science: A2 (9)
  • Hindi: A1 (10)
  • Total = 46. CGPA = 46 / 5 = 9.2 CGPA

Step 3: Convert CGPA to Percentage

Now for the most important step. You cannot just multiply your CGPA by 10. The official CBSE conversion formula uses a multiplier of 9.5.

    Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

    For the student above with a 9.2 CGPA: 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%

    Why is the Multiplier 9.5?

CBSE analyzed years of data and realized that students who get an A1 (10 points) usually average around 95 marks, not 100. Multiplying by 9.5 gives a much more statistically accurate reflection of your actual marks.

    The JEE 75% Criteria

If you are planning to write the JEE Mains to get into an NIT or IIT, you must meet the 75% Board Criteria (65% for SC/ST).

If your CBSE result is in CGPA, you must do the 9.5 multiplication. To be eligible for JEE, your CGPA must be at least a 7.9 (7.9 × 9.5 = 75.05%). If you have a 7.8 CGPA, you are mathematically disqualified from IITs regardless of your JEE rank.
