CUET Domain Selection: The Biggest Mistake DU Applicants Make

FastGPA Educational Team

The Form-Filling Disaster

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) offers an overwhelming amount of freedom. You can choose up to 6 test papers (Languages, Domains, and General Test).

Because of this freedom, a catastrophic trend has emerged: Students are choosing "easy" subjects in CUET to maximize their score, completely ignoring Delhi University's strict eligibility rules.

When the counseling (CSAS) portal opens, their applications are instantly rejected. They score a 99 percentile, but they get zero college seats. Here is how to avoid this.

The Golden Rule of Delhi University

Delhi University (DU) has one absolute, unbreakable rule for CUET: You MUST appear in CUET for the exact same subjects you studied and passed in your Class 12th Board Exams.

The Science to Arts Trap
Imagine you are a Class 12th Science student (Physics, Chemistry, Math). You realize you hate science and want to pursue B.A. (Hons) Political Science at Hindu College.

You look at the CUET form and think: "Physics is hard. Political Science is easy. I will choose Political Science, History, and Geography in CUET to get a higher score."

Result: DU will reject your application. Even if you score 800/800. Why? Because you did not study History and Geography in Class 12.

The Correct Path: You must write CUET in Physics, Chemistry, and Math. DU will use your PCM score in CUET to generate a merit list for the B.A. Political Science program.

The B.Com (Hons) Mathematics Requirement

If you want to study B.Com (Hons) or B.A. (Hons) Economics at elite colleges like SRCC or St. Stephen's, there is another brutal rule: You MUST have studied Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in Class 12, and you MUST write the Math paper in CUET.

  • A Commerce student without Math (who took Physical Education instead) cannot apply for B.Com (Hons) at DU, no matter how high they score in Accounts and Business Studies. (They can only apply for B.Com Program).
  • The General Test Dilemma

Should you take Section III (The General Test)?

  • Yes, if: You are targeting BBA, BMS, or BBE at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS). The GT is mandatory.
  • No, if: You are only targeting pure Science (B.Sc) or pure Humanities (B.A. Hons) at DU. The General Test score will simply be ignored, and you will have wasted study time.
  • How to Plan Your Form

  • Language: Always take exactly one language (Section I) that you passed in Class 12 (usually English).
  • Domains: Select exactly 3 or 4 subjects that are physically printed on your Class 12 board admit card.
  • Map the Course: Read the DU CSAS bulletin. Verify the specific requirement (e.g., "Any 1 Language + Math + Any 2 Domains") for your target degree.
  • Do not try to outsmart the system by taking easy domains. Play by DU's rigid rules, and use our CUET Normalization Tracker to predict your post-shift score.
