Predict Your Semester Results

Exams just finished. You know roughly what marks you are going to get in each subject. Why wait two months for the university to publish the official scorecard when you can calculate your SGPA today?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the fundamental building block of your engineering degree. It measures your performance for a single semester.

Here is exactly how universities calculate it, and how you can predict yours right now.

The Two Variables: Credits and Grade Points

To calculate your SGPA, you need to understand two numbers for every subject you took:
  • Credits: This is the "weight" of the subject. A heavy core engineering subject (like Thermodynamics or Data Structures) is usually worth 3 or 4 credits. A small lab or seminar is usually worth 1 or 2 credits.
  • Grade Points: This is the score you earned based on your marks. In India, most universities use a 10-point scale:
  • * 90-100 Marks = O Grade = 10 Points * 80-89 Marks = A+ Grade = 9 Points * 70-79 Marks = A Grade = 8 Points * 60-69 Marks = B+ Grade = 7 Points * Below 40 = F Grade = 0 Points (Fail)

    The SGPA Formula

Your SGPA is a weighted average. You multiply your Grade Points by the Credits for each subject, add them all up, and divide by the total credits.

    Formula: SGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade Points) / Σ (Total Credits)

    An Example Calculation

Let's say you are in Semester 3 and you took 4 subjects:
  • Subject 1 (Math-III): 4 Credits. You expect an A (8 Points).
  • * 4 × 8 = 32
  • Subject 2 (Data Structures): 4 Credits. You expect an O (10 Points).
  • * 4 × 10 = 40
  • Subject 3 (Digital Electronics): 3 Credits. You expect a B+ (7 Points).
  • * 3 × 7 = 21
  • Subject 4 (Lab): 1.5 Credits. You expect an A+ (9 Points).
  • * 1.5 × 9 = 13.5

    Total Points: 32 + 40 + 21 + 13.5 = 106.5 Total Credits Attempted: 4 + 4 + 3 + 1.5 = 12.5

    SGPA = 106.5 / 12.5 = 8.52 SGPA

    Why Credits Ruin Your SGPA

If you look at the math, you will realize a harsh truth: Failing a 4-credit subject destroys your SGPA, while failing a 1-credit lab barely hurts it.

If you are weak in a 4-credit core subject, you must spend 80% of your study time on it. Getting an 'O' in a 1-credit seminar will not save your SGPA if you get a 'C' in Engineering Mathematics.
