Mumbai University (MU) CGPA to Percentage Conversion Guide

The Most Confusing Formula in India

If you study under Mumbai University (MU), you already know that everything is slightly more complicated than it needs to be. The grading system is no exception.

Unlike Anna University (multiply by 10) or VTU (subtract 0.75 and multiply by 10), Mumbai University uses a tiered linear equation to convert your 10-point CGPA into a percentage.

If you guess this math on your placement resume, you will get it wrong. Here is the exact official formula required by MU.

The MU Official 7.1 Formula

According to official Mumbai University circulars, the formula you use depends entirely on your CGPA bracket.

For students with a CGPA between 7.0 and 10.0:

  • Percentage = (CGPA × 7.1) + 11
  • Let's do the math for an 8.5 CGPA: Percentage = (8.5 × 7.1) + 11 = 60.35 + 11 = 71.35%

(Notice how low that is? At Anna University, an 8.5 CGPA is 85%. At Mumbai University, an 8.5 CGPA is only 71.35%. MU grading is notoriously deflated).

For students with a CGPA less than 7.0:

  • Percentage = (CGPA × 7.2) + 12
  • Let's do the math for a 6.5 CGPA: Percentage = (6.5 × 7.2) + 12 = 46.8 + 12 = 58.8%

    The 60% Placements Cutoff Crisis

Because MU's formula yields such low percentages, MU students frequently face crises during campus placements.

    If TCS demands a strict 60% cutoff, an MU student needs exactly a 6.76 CGPA to qualify. (Calculation: 6.76 7.2 + 12 = 60.67%)*

If an MU student gets a 6.5 CGPA, they assume they have 65% and apply. When HR runs the 7.2 formula, they realize the student only has 58.8% and rejects them.

What if I have the older 7-Point scale?

Before implementing the 10-point scale (CBCGS), Mumbai University used a 7-point scale (CBGS). If you are an older alumni trying to apply for grad school, the conversion is completely different. A 7-point CGPA usually translates directly to classes (e.g., above 6.0 is First Class with Distinction).
