Private Engineering Colleges: The Reality of "100% Placement" Claims
The Billboard Illusion
It is admission season. Every highway in India is plastered with billboards for private Tier-3 engineering colleges.
The billboard screams: "100% Placement Record! Highest Package: ₹54 Lakhs (Google)!"
Desperate parents pay ₹15 Lakhs in "donations" (capitation fees) to secure a CSE seat for their child based on these numbers.
Here is the brutal, unfiltered reality of how private colleges manipulate their placement data. Do not get scammed.
Scam 1: The "Off-Campus" Hijack (The 54 LPA Myth)
That ₹54 Lakh Google package on the billboard? Google did not visit their campus.
One brilliant student in the college applied to Google independently through LinkedIn (off-campus), solved 5 rounds of LeetCode, and got the job entirely on their own merit. The college instantly takes credit for it, prints the student's face on a billboard, and uses it to lure 1,000 new admissions.
The Reality: The actual "on-campus" highest package brought by the college's placement cell is usually ₹8 to ₹12 LPA.
Scam 2: The "100% Placement" Math Trick
How can a college legally claim 100% placement when half the batch is unemployed?
They use a strict "Eligibility Criteria." In their fine print, they state that only students with an 8.0+ CGPA, zero active backlogs, and 85% attendance are "eligible" for the placement drive.
Out of 1,000 students, they disqualify 700 students using these strict rules. Out of the 300 remaining "eligible" students, they manage to place 295 in mass recruiters.
Mathematically, they placed 295/300 eligible students. Boom. "98% Placement Record."
Scam 3: The Mass Recruiter Trap (TCS/Wipro/Cognizant)
The backbone of Tier-3 private colleges are the IT service giants (The WITCH companies).
They visit the campus and hire 400 students in a single day.
This is not a bad start if you have no other options, but it is a far cry from the "glamorous tech life" the college promised.
Scam 4: BPO and Sales Jobs Disguised as "Tech"
To inflate placement numbers at the end of the year, colleges invite EdTech companies (like Byju's, Simplilearn) or BPOs. They offer high packages (₹8 LPA to ₹10 LPA), but the job is hardcore cold-calling sales (Business Development Associate), not software engineering.
Students take the job out of desperation, realize they have to sell courses to poor parents for 12 hours a day, and quit within 2 months.
