UPSC Age Limit Explained: Do Not Waste Your Attempts

The Ticking Clock of UPSC

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is not an exam you can write forever. The government imposes strict caps on both your maximum age and the total number of times you can attempt the exam.

Every year, thousands of students miscalculate their age limits by a few days and find their application rejected permanently.

Here is the absolute, unyielding mathematics behind the UPSC eligibility criteria.

The Core Rule: August 1st

The most critical date in the UPSC calendar is August 1st of the year of the examination.

  • You must have attained the age of 21 years by August 1st.
  • You must NOT have crossed the maximum age limit by August 1st.
  • Example: If the exam is in 2026, your age is calculated exactly as of August 1, 2026. If you turn 32 on August 2, 2026, you are perfectly eligible. If you turned 32 on July 31, 2026, you are disqualified permanently.

    Category-Wise Limits (Age and Attempts)

The UPSC operates on a strict reservation-based relaxation system. You must know your exact bucket:

    1. General Category (UR) & EWS

  • Maximum Age: 32 Years.
  • Maximum Attempts: 6 Attempts.
  • The Reality:* If you start at age 22, you will exhaust your 6 attempts by age 28, even though you are under the age limit. You must manage your attempts strategically. Do not give a "practice attempt."

    2. OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer)

  • Maximum Age: 35 Years (3 years relaxation).
  • Maximum Attempts: 9 Attempts.
  • The Reality:* This gives you massive breathing room. You can take a 2-year break to work in the private sector and come back to UPSC without aging out.

    3. SC/ST Category

  • Maximum Age: 37 Years (5 years relaxation).
  • Maximum Attempts: Unlimited (until you hit the age limit of 37).
  • 4. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

  • Maximum Age: 42 Years (10 years relaxation).
  • Maximum Attempts: 9 for General/OBC/EWS. Unlimited for SC/ST.
  • What Counts as an "Attempt"?

This is the biggest myth in the UPSC ecosystem.

  • Filling the Form: Does NOT count as an attempt.
  • Downloading the Admit Card: Does NOT count as an attempt.
  • Appearing in Prelims: Even if you just sit in the exam hall, sign the attendance sheet, and submit a blank OMR for Paper 1 (GS), it counts as a full attempt.
  • If you are not 100% prepared, do not enter the examination hall. Stay home.

    The Strategic Buffer

If you are a General Category candidate, the 6-attempt limit is terrifying. You must have a backup plan (Plan B) ready by your 3rd attempt (Age 25). Do not blindly assume you will crack it in your 6th attempt at age 31 with zero work experience.
