UPSC Engineering Services (IES): The Toughest Tech Exam

FastGPA Educational Team

The Pinnacle of Core Engineering

When people hear "UPSC," they immediately think of the IAS or IPS.

But for core engineering graduates (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics), the Union Public Service Commission conducts another legendary exam: the Engineering Services Examination (ESE).

Clearing this exam grants you the title of Indian Engineering Services (IES) Officer—a Class-1 Gazetted Officer post under the President of India.

This is the ultimate dream for core engineers. Let's look at why it is considered the toughest technical exam in the country, often harder than GATE.

The Prestige and Power

An IES officer manages the massive technical infrastructure of the Indian government.

  • Civil Engineers: Join the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), or Border Roads Organization (BRO).
  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineers: Manage massive power grids, railway workshops, and defense ordnances.
  • The Perks: A customized government vehicle, a massive bungalow in a VIP area, immense societal respect, and complete job security.
  • Why ESE is Harder than GATE

GATE is a 3-hour objective test of numerical ability. You can crack GATE by selectively studying 70% of the syllabus.

The ESE is an absolute marathon that tests theoretical depth, endurance, and memorization. It is conducted in three grueling stages:

    Stage 1: Preliminary Exam (Objective)

  • Paper 1: General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (200 Marks). This includes Ethics, Project Management, and Current Affairs.
  • Paper 2: Core Engineering (300 Marks).
  • Stage 2: Mains Exam (Conventional / Written)

  • This is where the bloodbath happens. Two papers of 300 marks each.
  • You must write long-form, subjective derivations and solve massive numerical problems step-by-step using a pen and paper. There are no multiple-choice options to guess from. You must know the entire syllabus.
  • Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

  • 200 Marks. A UPSC board of elite bureaucrats and technical experts will test your leadership, ethics, and ability to handle pressure.
  • The Shrinking Vacancies

Here is the harsh reality of the ESE in recent years: The vacancies are crashing.

A decade ago, the railways hired hundreds of engineers through ESE. Recently, the government merged railway technical recruitment into the IRMS (Indian Railway Management Service), initially removing them from ESE (though policies fluctuate).

For some branches like Electronics and Telecommunication, the total nationwide vacancies can drop below 50. You are fighting lakhs of students for 50 seats.

    The Backup Strategy

Never prepare exclusively for ESE. The syllabus of ESE overlaps about 80% with GATE.

You must prepare for ESE (which builds extreme theoretical depth) but actively write the GATE exam as your safety net to secure a PSU job or an M.Tech seat if the UPSC gamble fails.
