VTU CGPA to Percentage Conversion (Official 2026 Formula)

The Biggest Mistake VTU Students Make

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is one of the largest engineering universities in India. If you study in Karnataka, there is a very high chance you are under the VTU grading system.

When placement season arrives, HR forms will ask for your Percentage, not your CGPA.

The biggest mistake VTU students make is simply multiplying their CGPA by 10. If you have an 8.5 CGPA, you might write "85%" on your resume. This is completely wrong and can get your job offer revoked.

The Official VTU Conversion Formula

VTU strictly follows the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) guidelines for converting CGPA to percentage.

The official formula is: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

Let's Do The Math

Let's see why multiplying by 10 is so dangerous. If your CGPA is 7.0:
  • Wrong Method (x10): 70%
  • Official VTU Method: (7.0 - 0.75) × 10 = 6.25 × 10 = 62.5%
  • If you wrote 70% on your resume, but HR calculates it as 62.5%, they will assume you are intentionally lying to pass their 65% cutoff filters. You will be blacklisted from the placement drive.

    Why Does VTU Subtract 0.75?

The 0.75 subtraction accounts for the statistical variance in grading. Getting a 10 CGPA in VTU does not mean you scored 100 out of 100 marks in every subject. A 10 point grade (O grade) is usually awarded for scoring above 90 marks. Therefore, a 10 CGPA realistically translates to a 92.5% average, not a 100%.

Does This Formula Apply to SGPA?

Yes. If you want to calculate the percentage for a single semester, you use the exact same formula, just replacing CGPA with SGPA:
  • Percentage = (SGPA - 0.75) × 10.
  • However, if you want to find your overall B.Tech percentage, you cannot just average your SGPA percentages. You must first calculate your true, credit-weighted CGPA using our SGPA to CGPA Calculator, and then apply the -0.75 formula to the final result.
