What is 75% Attendance Actually? (How Many Classes Can You Bunk?)

GPA Hub Engineering Team

The 75% Terror

It is the most dreaded rule in the Indian education system: "Students must maintain 75% minimum attendance to write the final university exams."

If your attendance drops to 74%, colleges can (and will) issue a Semester Detention. You will be barred from entering the exam hall, automatically failing every single subject and guaranteeing a Year Back.

But what does 75% actually mean in real life? How many days can you stay in bed? Let's do the exact math.

The Math of Bunking

Attendance is not calculated by days; it is calculated by total conducted lectures.

Let's assume a standard engineering subject: Engineering Physics.

  • The professor conducts 40 lectures over the entire semester.
  • To hit 75%, you must attend: 40 × 0.75 = 30 lectures.
  • This means you are legally allowed to bunk exactly 10 lectures of Physics for the entire 4-month semester.
  • The "Medical Certificate" Exception

Most universities have a built-in safety net. If your attendance falls between 65% and 74%, you can still write the exam IF you submit a valid medical certificate from a registered doctor proving you were severely ill, and pay a "condonation fee" (a fine).

If your attendance drops below 65%, even the Vice Chancellor cannot save you. A medical certificate will be rejected, and you will be detained.

    The Danger of Late Semesters

The biggest mistake students make is blowing through their "safe bunks" in the first month. If you skip 8 Physics classes in August because it's raining, you only have 2 safe bunks left for September, October, and November. If you get genuinely sick with Dengue fever in November and miss 5 classes, you will drop below 75% and face detention.

The Golden Rule: Always keep your attendance above 85% for the first two months. Save your bunks for the end of the semester when you are exhausted and need time to study for lab externals.

    Stop Guessing. Calculate It.

Do not track your attendance in a messy notebook. Do not rely on your professor's warning list.

    Use our Attendance Calculator.

  • Enter the number of classes conducted.
  • Enter the number of classes you attended.
  • Our calculator will instantly tell you: "You can safely bunk the next 4 classes," OR "You must attend the next 12 classes continuously to reach 75%."
  • Never let an 8 AM class cost you a Year Back. Track the math.
