Frequently Asked Questions

CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) are the same calculation — both are the credit-weighted average of grade points across all completed semesters on a 10-point scale. IITs use the term CPI while most other Indian universities use CGPA. Similarly, SPI (Semester Performance Index) at IITs is the same as SGPA at other universities — it measures performance in a single semester only.
CPI = Sum of (Grade Point × Course Credits) for all courses ÷ Sum of all Course Credits. For example, if you take a 4-credit course and score grade A (8 points) and a 3-credit course with grade B+ (7 points), your SPI = (4×8 + 3×7) ÷ (4+3) = (32+21) ÷ 7 = 53 ÷ 7 = 7.57. CPI extends this across all completed semesters.
For on-campus placements at IITs, most companies have a minimum CPI of 6.0–7.0. Top product companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs) typically require 7.5+ CPI. Consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) usually shortlist students with 8.0+ CPI. Core engineering PSUs require GATE qualification in addition. Some companies have a 'CPI not barrier' policy and rely entirely on test/interview performance.
The standard formula for converting a 10-point Indian CPI to a 4.0 US GPA is: US GPA = (CPI / 10) × 4. For example, a CPI of 8.5 = (8.5/10) × 4 = 3.4 GPA. WES (World Education Services) uses a more nuanced institution-specific evaluation, but this formula is the most widely accepted approximation for self-reporting on applications.
Most IITs set a minimum CPI of 5.0 for continuing students to maintain normal academic standing. Falling below 5.0 CPI may result in academic probation, which restricts course registration and extracurricular activities. Consecutive semesters below minimum CPI thresholds can lead to academic dismissal. Specific rules vary by IIT — always check your institution's academic regulations.
