Frequently Asked Questions

The formula is: Required SGPA = (Target CGPA × Total Semesters − Current CGPA × Completed Semesters) ÷ Remaining Semesters. For example, if you have 6.8 CGPA after 4 semesters and want 7.5 by end of 8 semesters: Required SGPA = (7.5 × 8 − 6.8 × 4) ÷ 4 = 8.2. You need 8.2 SGPA every remaining semester.
It depends on how many semesters you've completed. If you're in an 8-semester program and completed 4 semesters at 6.5 CGPA, you would need (8.0 × 8 − 6.5 × 4) ÷ 4 = 9.5 SGPA every remaining semester. While technically achievable (max is 10), it is extremely difficult. A more realistic target would be 7.5–8.0 CGPA, requiring around 8.5–9.0 SGPA per remaining semester.
The top product companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe) typically require a minimum of 7.5–8.0 CGPA for on-campus recruitment at IITs and NITs. For off-campus applications or FAANG-type roles, 8.0+ CGPA is preferred. Some companies like Infosys and TCS have a lower cutoff of 6.0–6.5 CGPA.
CGPA improvement gets harder as you progress because the weight of past semesters increases. Early-semester improvements have more impact — a student in semester 2 can double the weight of their improved performance, while a student in semester 7 (out of 8) can only impact 12.5% of their total credits. The earlier you start improving, the more achievable your target will be.
In most Indian universities, when you clear a backlog (failed subject), the new passing grade replaces the previous fail (F grade) in CGPA calculation — it does NOT add a new credit attempt that could raise your CGPA. You simply go from an F to a Pass, removing a CGPA-dragging zero. Some universities do allow improvement exams. Check your specific university's ATKT/backlog policy.
