Irish Honours Classification System

Unlike North America, Ireland largely uses the British Honours classification system. Your final degree is awarded a "Class" based on your overall percentage average.

Standard Degree Boundaries

  • First Class Honours (H1 or 1:1): 70% and above
  • Second Class Honours, Grade 1 (H2.1 or 2:1): 60% – 69%
  • Second Class Honours, Grade 2 (H2.2 or 2:2): 50% – 59%
  • Third Class Honours (H3 or 3rd): 40% – 49%
  • Pass: 35% – 39% (Fail below 35%)

How Does Year Weighting Work?

Many Irish universities do not weight every year of your degree equally. The final years are typically weighted much heavier than earlier years to reflect advanced study.

  • UCD (University College Dublin): The final degree award is usually based on the final two stages (years), weighted 30% for the penultimate stage and 70% for the final stage.
  • Trinity College Dublin: Final year results generally hold the most weight, often 70% to 100% depending on the specific faculty or subject.
  • First Year: At almost all Irish institutions, the first year (Stage 1) is simply pass/fail and does not contribute to your final degree classification.
