How are Medicine Points Calculated in Ireland?
Entry into undergraduate medicine in Ireland is highly competitive. Standard CAO points alone are not enough. You must also sit the HPAT-Ireland (Health Professions Admission Test).
Because of the intense competition, the CAO system "moderates" points above 550 to ensure that the HPAT score carries significant weight in the final ranking.
The Moderation Rule (Points > 550)
If you score 550 CAO points or below, your full CAO points are added to your HPAT score.
However, for every 5 CAO points you score above 550, only 1 point is added to your total.
- 550 CAO Points = 550 Adjusted Points
- 560 CAO Points = 552 Adjusted Points (+2)
- 600 CAO Points = 560 Adjusted Points (+10)
- 625 CAO Points = 565 Adjusted Points (+15 max)
