The 9-Point GPA Scale
Unlike the US system which maxes out at 4.0, almost all universities in New Zealand use a 9-point GPA system. This allows for much finer distinction at the top end of the grading curve.
| Grade | GPA Points | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 9 | 90 - 100% |
| A | 8 | 85 - 89% |
| A- | 7 | 80 - 84% |
| B+ | 6 | 75 - 79% |
| B | 5 | 70 - 74% |
| B- | 4 | 65 - 69% |
| C+ | 3 | 60 - 64% |
| C | 2 | 55 - 59% |
| C- | 1 | 50 - 54% |
| Fail | 0 | Below 50% |
NZ Credits System
In New Zealand, a standard full-time academic year consists of 120 points (credits). A standard three-year Bachelor's degree totals 360 points.
Individual courses usually carry 15 points each (meaning you take 8 courses per year), but this can vary. For example, some large projects or double-semester courses might be worth 30 points. When calculating your GPA, your grade points are weighted by the credit value of the course.
