How NCEA Converts to GPA

The New Zealand NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) uses a standards-based assessment model, rather than strict percentage grades or standard A-F letters. Because of this, converting NCEA to a US GPA is not a perfect science. Most US universities (like the Ivy Leagues or the UC system) will evaluate your transcript holistically.

However, for baseline screening and athletic scholarships (like NCAA), a general rule of thumb is applied to the credits earned at Level 3 (Year 13):

  • Excellence (E): Roughly equivalent to an A / A+ (US GPA 3.7 - 4.0). Shows true mastery.
  • Merit (M): Roughly equivalent to a B / B+ (US GPA 3.0 - 3.3). Shows strong understanding.
  • Achieved (A): Roughly equivalent to a C / C+ (US GPA 2.0 - 2.5). Meets minimum standard.
  • Not Achieved (N): No credits awarded, equivalent to an F.

NCAA and University Entrance

If you are applying for sports scholarships in the US under the NCAA, they have a strict conversion table for international student-athletes. The NCAA usually treats Excellence as an A (4.0), Merit as a B (3.0), and Achieved as a C (2.0) when calculating your core-course GPA.

Domestically, to gain University Entrance (UE) in New Zealand, you need at least 14 credits in three approved subjects at Level 3, along with minimum literacy and numeracy requirements. If you do not have enough credits to pass Level 3, your estimated GPA will reflect that you may struggle to gain standard admission.
