Graduation Requirements in New Zealand

Unlike the US system where students graduate with Latin Honours (Cum Laude, etc.), New Zealand universities (like Auckland, Otago, Victoria, and Canterbury) typically award standard degrees with specific tags based on your final GPA.

  • Distinction: Usually requires a GPA of 8.0 or higher (an A to A+ average).
  • Merit: Usually requires a GPA of 6.0 or higher (a B+ average).
  • Pass: Anything below a 6.0, provided you meet the minimum passing criteria (usually around a 1.0 to 2.0 GPA depending on the program's core requirements).

How this Calculation Works

This calculator uses a weighted average formula to figure out your required future performance. It assumes that all credits are weighted equally towards your final GPA.

Required GPA = [(Target GPA × Total Credits) - (Current GPA × Completed Credits)] ÷ Remaining Credits

Note: Some universities apply different weighting to different years of study. For example, some Honours programs might weight your final year courses more heavily than your first year. Always check your specific university handbook for exact graduation requirements.
