Frequently Asked Questions

Your UAS (also called Rank Points) is calculated from your best 3 H2 subject grades plus your best H1 subject grade. Points are assigned as: H2 A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=7.5. H1 scores are exactly half the H2 values. The maximum from 3H2+1H1 is 70 points. If your Mother Tongue Language (MTL) at H1 level improves your score, it can be included to push the maximum to 90 points. From 2026 admissions, General Paper (GP) is assessed as Pass/Fail and no longer adds to your UAS.
NUS Computer Science is highly competitive. The Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) for 2025 admissions shows an approximate UAS range of 82.5 to 90 for the 10th–90th percentile of admitted students. In practice, most admitted students score 85–90 UAS. The exact cutoff changes each year depending on the applicant pool. For NTU's Computer Science and Engineering, the typical range is slightly lower at 80–87.5.
Yes. If your H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) grade, when converted to H1 rank points, would improve your total UAS compared to using another H1 subject, MOE will automatically include it. Your UAS is computed both with and without MTL, and the higher score is used. This means MTL is only included if it helps you — it can never hurt your UAS. The maximum possible UAS with MTL included is 90 points.
UAS (University Admission Score) and Rank Points (RP) are the same thing — just different names for the same metric. 'Rank Points' is the older term still used by many schools and tutors. 'UAS' is the official current term used by NUS, NTU, and SMU for their admissions processes. Both refer to the numerical score (max 90) derived from your A-Level grades used for university admission ranking.
When applicants have identical UAS scores, local universities use additional criteria for tie-breaking including: H1 Mother Tongue grade, co-curricular activity (CCA) records, personal statement or portfolio (for creative courses), aptitude test scores (for some faculties), and interview performance (where applicable). NUS and NTU also have a 'First Choice Bonus Points' scheme that gives additional weighting to students who put the programme as their first choice.
