How to Convert 5.0 CAP to 4.0 GPA

Because the Singapore system (NUS, NTU) uses a 5.0 scale, and the US system uses a 4.0 scale, a direct conversion isn't always straightforward. However, the most widely accepted standard for linear conversion is:

US GPA = (Singapore CAP / 5.0) × 4.0

For example, a NUS CAP of 4.5 translates to a US GPA of 3.6. A CAP of 4.0 translates to 3.2. Note that while this is the standard formula, some highly competitive US graduate schools may do a line-by-line course evaluation instead of using a flat conversion.

UK Degree Class Equivalents

If you are applying to universities in the UK (such as Oxford, Cambridge, or LSE), they look for Honours classifications rather than GPAs. The typical equivalency is:

  • First Class Honours: CAP 4.50+
  • Upper Second Class (2:1): CAP 4.00 - 4.49
  • Lower Second Class (2:2): CAP 3.50 - 3.99
  • Third Class: CAP 3.00 - 3.49

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculation depends on the specific grading scale used by your institution in Singapore. Generally, we map your local percentage or grade points to a standard 4.0 scale.
A competitive score usually aligns with a 3.5 to 4.0 on the standard US scale, which typically requires achieving the highest grade band (like First Class Honours or High Distinction) in Singapore.
Most international universities or credential evaluators (like WES) will perform their own official conversion of your Singapore grades during the admissions process. This calculator provides a highly accurate estimate.
