Frequently Asked Questions
In August 2023, NUS officially renamed 'Modular Credits' (MCs) to 'Units'. They are exactly the same thing. A standard module at NUS is worth 4 Units. To graduate with a standard 4-year Honours degree, you need to complete a minimum of 160 Units.
Most 4-year Honours degree programmes (such as those in the College of Humanities and Sciences or the College of Design and Engineering) require a minimum of 160 Units to graduate. This is typically divided into: 60 Units for the Common Curriculum (ULR), 60 Units for Major Requirements, and 40 Units for Unrestricted Electives (UE).
Unrestricted Electives (UE) are free elective modules that you can take from any faculty or department across NUS, provided you meet the prerequisites. UEs allow you to explore interests outside your major, take up a Minor (which typically requires 20 Units), or even pursue a Second Major (which typically requires 40 Units).
Yes. The normal workload for an NUS student is 20 Units (5 standard modules) per semester. You can 'overload' and take up to 24 or even 28 Units per semester, though this requires approval from your faculty and is generally only recommended for students with a strong CAP. Freshmen are typically capped at 20 or 22 Units in their first semester.
Yes. Modules taken during the Student Exchange Programme (SEP) or Summer/Winter Programmes can be mapped back to NUS. Upon successful completion, the credits will transfer over as Units towards your graduation requirements, though the grades will usually appear as 'CS' (Completed Satisfactorily) and will not affect your CAP.
