CAP Impact Analysis
Math Breakdown:
The C+ (2.5) is lower than your current CAP of 3.80. Because it's dragging your average down, removing it via S/U raises your overall CAP.
How S/U Math Works
The Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory (S/U) option is a unique feature of Singapore universities like NUS and NTU. When you exercise this option on a module, the grade is completely stripped from your Cumulative Average Point (CAP) calculation.
The Basic Rule of Thumb:
You should S/U any module where the grade point is lower than your current CAP. For example, if your CAP is 4.0 (B+ average), and you get a B (3.5) in a module, that B will drag your average down. Exercising S/U will remove the B and raise your CAP back up.
NUS S/U Limits & Rules
You cannot S/U every module. Universities impose strict limits on how many Module Credits (MCs) you can declare as S/U throughout your degree.
- A-Level / JC Entry Students: Can S/U up to 32 MCs (typically 8 modules) in their first year.
- Polytechnic Entry Students: Can S/U up to 20 MCs in their first year.
- Years 2, 3, and 4: You can carry forward up to 12 unused MCs from your first year to use in upper years.
Additionally, S/U can usually only be used on Level 1000 modules, and Level 2000 modules that do not have prerequisites. Core faculty modules often cannot be S/U'd. Always check your faculty's specific rules.
