The 4th Subject Trap
In September of Year 12, ambitious students take 4 A-Levels. They want to prove they are academic titans. By November of Year 13, reality sets in. The workload is crushing them. They are predicted A, A, B, and a D in Physics.
They go to their Head of Year and say: "I want to drop Physics." The Head of Year panics and says: "Don't drop it! You need the UCAS points! A Grade D is still 24 points!"
Is the Head of Year right?
Quality vs Quantity
The Head of Year is mathematically correct, but strategically wrong.Yes, an A-Level at Grade D gives you 24 UCAS points. If you keep 4 subjects and get A, A, B, D: 48 + 48 + 40 + 24 = 160 points.*
But if keeping that 4th subject exhausts you, and drags your other grades down, you might end up with B, B, C, D. 40 + 40 + 32 + 24 = 136 points.*
If you drop the 4th subject entirely, reclaim 10 hours a week of free time, and focus entirely on your core 3 subjects, you could achieve A, A, A. 48 + 48 + 48 = 144 points.*
144 points from 3 strong subjects is infinitely better than 136 points from 4 mediocre ones.
The "3 A-Level Minimum" Rule
Almost every university in the UK makes offers based on three A-Levels. If an offer says "120 UCAS Points," it usually comes with fine print: "From a minimum of 3 A-Levels."If you have 3 A-Levels at BBB (120 points), you are perfect. If you have 4 A-Levels at CDDD (128 points), you might be rejected. Why? Because many universities state: "We will only count your highest 3 grades." If they only count your C, D, D, your official total for them is actually 80 points. You fail the requirement.
Does Oxbridge Want 4 A-Levels?
No. Oxford and Cambridge have explicitly stated on their websites for a decade: "Our offers are based on 3 A-Levels. Taking a 4th A-Level provides no competitive advantage, unless the 4th subject is Further Mathematics."The Strategy: Unless your 4th subject is Further Maths (and you are applying for Economics, Physics, or Engineering), dropping a 4th A-Level is almost always the strategically correct move if it is damaging your mental health or dragging down your core grades. Use our calculator to prove to your school that securing AAA in 3 subjects yields a higher, safer UCAS point total than securing ABCC in 4 subjects.
