General Studies & Critical Thinking: The 2 A-Levels Worth 0 Points
The Ghost Subjects
You have worked hard. You have your predicted grades:
Your total is 128 UCAS points. You apply to the University of Leeds for an English degree requiring 120 points. You are rejected.
Why? Because your actual, university-recognized total is 80 points.
The General Studies Ban
For over twenty years, elite UK universities have engaged in a quiet war against two specific A-Levels: General Studies and Critical Thinking.Universities view these subjects as "soft." They argue that they do not require deep, rigorous, subject-specific academic research, and are often taught as an afterthought by schools trying to inflate their league table rankings.
Therefore, 90% of Russell Group universities have a strict, non-negotiable policy: "Offers will be based on 3 A-Levels. General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded and will not contribute to the tariff."
The "Native Language" Trap
There is a third, lesser-known subject that universities frequently ban: A-Level in your Native Language. If you moved to the UK from Poland at age 16, and you take A-Level Polish, you will likely get an A* with zero effort. Universities know this. Many competitive institutions state: "A-Levels in a student's native language, where they have been educated in that language prior to A-Level, may not be accepted as one of the 3 core subjects."
What Do You Do With These Subjects?
Are they completely useless? Not entirely. Mid-tier and Post-92 universities (who often just require a raw UCAS point total and are less concerned about subject prestige) will gladly accept your General Studies points.Furthermore, some universities will accept them as a 4th subject tie-breaker. If you get ABB in your core subjects, and the university wants AAB, they might use an A in General Studies as a mitigating factor to let you in. But you cannot rely on it as a core pillar of your application.
The Strategy: When calculating your UCAS points, assume General Studies and Critical Thinking do not exist. Never count them towards your target threshold. If your school forces you to take them, do not spend any revision time on them. Put 100% of your energy into securing the grades in your 3 core, university-approved academic subjects.
Check Excluded Subjects
Ensure your UCAS point total does not rely on subjects that universities will ignore.
