Student Bills Split: Surviving Housemates Who Won't Turn Off the Heating

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Winter War

It is November. You live in a poorly insulated 6-bedroom student house in Sheffield. You are trying to save money, so you wear a jumper and use a hot water bottle.

Your housemate, Dave, is from Surrey. Dave does not like wearing jumpers. Dave turns the central heating up to 25°C and leaves his window open "for fresh air."

In January, the quarterly energy bill arrives. It is £800. Dave says, "We split it 6 ways, right?" You feel a surge of intense rage.

Managing bills is the number one cause of destroyed friendships in university. Here is how to survive it.

The "Bills Included" Trap

Many students try to avoid arguments by renting a house with "Bills Included" in the rent. This is usually a financial trap. Landlords charge a massive premium for this (often £25+ a week extra per person). Over a year, you are overpaying by hundreds of pounds.

Worse, "Bills Included" contracts usually have a "Fair Usage" clause buried in the fine print. If Dave leaves the heating on 24/7, you will smash the Fair Usage limit, and the landlord will hand you a massive penalty bill at the end of the year anyway.

The Joint Account Disaster

The old way of managing bills was to open a joint bank account. Never do this. If you open a joint account with your 5 housemates, your credit files become legally linked. If Dave defaults on a massive credit card debt in three years, it will actively damage your credit score when you apply for a mortgage.

The Split-Bill Apps Solution

The only safe way to manage student bills without ruining your credit or fighting in the kitchen is to use a bill-splitting service (like Split The Bills, Glide, or UniHomes).

How it works:

  • The company sets up the gas, electricity, water, and Wi-Fi.
  • They calculate a fixed monthly cost per person.
  • Each housemate pays the company directly via Direct Debit.
  • The Advantage: If Dave refuses to pay his share, the company chases Dave. They do not chase you. You are legally protected from your housemates' financial incompetence. The Disadvantage: These companies charge an admin fee (usually £2-£3 a week). It is the price of peace.

The Strategy: If you want to do it manually to save money, the person whose name is on the energy account must be ruthless. Use our Student Room Cost Calculator to map out the estimated monthly bills in September. Agree in writing on a thermostat limit (e.g., max 20°C). If someone breaks the rule, they pay the excess.
