Scottish Highers Strategy: How to Hit 144 Points Without Advanced Highers
Crossing the Border
If you study in Scotland and apply to a Scottish university (like Edinburgh or Glasgow), life is simple. They use the Scottish framework (e.g., "ABBB by the end of S5").
But if you are a Scottish student wanting to study in England (e.g., at Manchester or Bristol), you are suddenly thrown into the UCAS Tariff system, which was primarily designed for English A-Levels.
English universities often ask for 144 UCAS points (equivalent to AAA at A-Level). How do you hit 144 points using the Scottish system?
The Value of a Scottish Higher
An A-Level is a two-year course. A Scottish Higher is a one-year course. Therefore, UCAS assigns fewer points to a Higher:If an English university asks for 144 points, and you take 4 Highers in S5 and get AAAA, you have: 33 + 33 + 33 + 33 = 132 points.
You are 12 points short. Even with four A grades, you mathematically cannot meet the AAA A-Level equivalent using only 4 Highers.
The 5-Higher Strategy
To hit 144 points using only Highers, you must take 5 Highers in S5.This is why almost all ambitious Scottish students take 5 Highers in S5. It is the only way to build a massive UCAS point total without doing a 6th year.
The Advanced Higher Dilemma
If you stay for S6 and take Advanced Highers (which are academically equivalent to, or harder than, A-Levels), the UCAS points increase dramatically:If you take 3 Advanced Highers in S6 and get ABB, you have: 56 + 48 + 48 = 152 points.
The Double-Counting Trap: Here is the critical rule that catches out thousands of Scottish students. You cannot double-count a Higher and an Advanced Higher in the same subject.
If you got an A in Higher Maths (33 points) in S5, and an A in Advanced Higher Maths (56 points) in S6, your total points for Maths is 56. The 33 points from S5 vanish.
The Strategy: If you want to go to an elite English university, taking 5 Highers in S5 is mandatory to build a wide point base. However, English universities heavily prefer applicants who stay for S6 and take at least two Advanced Highers, as this proves you can handle A-Level standard academic rigor.
