Trailed Modules: How to Progress to Year 3 With a Failed Exam

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The September Panic

You failed a 20-credit module in May. You took the resit in August. The results come out in September. You failed the resit.

You are devastated. As we covered previously, failing 20 credits usually means you cannot progress to Year 3. You are facing a "Repeat Year" scenario, delaying your graduation and costing you thousands in rent.

However, before you sign the lease for another year, you must check if your university operates a "Trailed Module" policy.

What is a Trailed Module?

A trailed module (sometimes called "carrying a module") is a bureaucratic lifeline. It allows you to progress to Year 3 and take your normal 120 credits of Year 3 classes, while simultaneously retaking the 20-credit Year 2 module you failed.

You essentially take 140 credits in your final year instead of 120.

The Strict Conditions for Trailing

Universities do not advertise this option heavily because they know 140 credits will place you under immense academic stress.

To be allowed to trail a module, you usually must meet very strict criteria:

  • Credit Limit: You can usually only trail a maximum of 20 credits. If you failed 40 credits, you must repeat the year.
  • Not a Core Prerequisite: You cannot trail a module if it is a strict prerequisite for a Year 3 module. (e.g., If you failed "Advanced French Grammar II" in Year 2, they will not let you take "Final Year French Translation" in Year 3).
  • Overall WAM: Your average across the 100 credits you did pass must be solid (usually above 50%). If you barely scraped 40% on everything else, they will not trust you to handle 140 credits.
  • The Danger of the 140-Credit Year

Trailing a module saves your timeline, but it is incredibly dangerous.

Your Year 3 is already the hardest year of your life. You have a 10,000-word dissertation and heavily weighted core modules. Adding an extra 20-credit exam on top of that is a recipe for burnout.

Furthermore, the trailed Year 2 module is still subject to the 40% resit cap. You are going to spend 40 hours studying for an extra exam in May, distracting you from your critical Year 3 exams, just to secure a capped 40% on your transcript.

The Strategy: If you fail an August resit, immediately contact your academic registry and ask: "Am I eligible to trail this 20-credit module into Year 3?" If they say yes, take it. It saves you a year of your life. But you must ruthlessly compartmentalize. You must accept that the trailed module is only going to give you 40%, and you must spend the absolute minimum amount of time studying for it so you can protect your heavily weighted Year 3 modules.
