Clearing: The Brutal Truth About Missing Your A-Level Grades in August
The 8:00 AM Panic
It is the third Thursday in August. A-Level Results Day. At 8:00 AM, you log into UCAS Track before you even go to school to pick up your envelope.
The screen loads. The text is bold and red: Status: You are in Clearing.
Your heart drops. This means you missed the grades for your Firm choice, and you missed the grades for your Insurance choice. You officially have no university to go to in September.
You have approximately three hours to secure a degree before all the good spots are taken. Welcome to the bloodbath of UCAS Clearing.
The Reality of the Clearing Market
Clearing is essentially a frantic stock market for empty university seats. Universities have calculated exactly how many students failed to meet their offers, and they are desperate to fill those empty beds to secure their tuition fee revenue.Because they are desperate, the normal rules of admissions are temporarily suspended. If a course normally requires AAB, a university in Clearing might accept a student with BBC—but only if you call them before they fill their quota.
The 3-Step Survival Protocol
If you wake up in Clearing, you cannot panic. You must execute a military-style operation.1. Do Not Go to School Yet Do not drive to your school to open your envelope with your friends. You do not have time for tears and hugs. Sit at your kitchen table with a laptop, a fully charged phone, a pen, and your UCAS ID number.
2. Call the "Near Miss" Hotline Check your actual grades. If your Firm choice required AAB, and you got ABB, call your Firm choice immediately. Do not assume it's over. Call their specific admissions hotline and beg. Tell them you will retake a module, or tell them you will accept a Foundation Year. Sometimes, a human on the phone can manually override the computer's rejection.
3. The Clearing Call Script When you call a new university in Clearing, they will make a decision on the phone in about 4 minutes. You must sound professional, calm, and desperate to attend. Script: "Hello, my UCAS ID is 123456. I have achieved BBC in History, English, and Politics. I see you have vacancies for BA International Relations. I am incredibly passionate about this course, and I am ready to accept a verbal offer right now."
The Strategy: Clearing is first-come, first-served. The prestigious universities (Russell Groups) that enter Clearing will fill their empty spots by 10:30 AM. If you wait until the afternoon to start making phone calls, you will be left with the scraps. Be ruthless, be early, and secure the verbal offer.
