The Credibility Interview: What They Will Actually Ask You on Skype

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Skype Interrogation

You submit your visa application. You think the hard part is over. A week later, you receive an email from UK Visas and Immigration: "You have been selected to attend a Credibility Interview via video link."

Your heart races. Why were you selected? Did you do something wrong? No. If you are applying from specific regions (often South Asia, West Africa, or parts of the Middle East), a certain percentage of students are randomly selected for a "Genuineness Test."

The Home Office wants to ensure you are a real academic student, and not an economic migrant using the university as a front to enter the UK and work in a warehouse.

The Format

You will log onto a secure video platform. A Home Office caseworker (sitting in Sheffield, UK) will appear on screen. The interview lasts roughly 15 to 25 minutes. It is typed into a transcript as you speak.

If you answer these questions poorly, they will refuse your visa under the "Genuine Student" rule, even if your bank statements are perfect.

The 4 Core Questions (And How to Answer Them)

1. "Why did you choose the UK over your home country or the USA?" Bad Answer:* "I like the culture and want to live in London." (Sounds like a tourist/migrant). Good Answer:* "The UK offers a 1-year intensive Master's, saving me time compared to a 2-year US degree. Specifically, the UK's regulatory framework in Data Privacy aligns perfectly with my thesis topic."

2. "Why did you choose this specific university?" Bad Answer:* "My agent recommended it because it was cheap." (Instant red flag). Good Answer:* "I applied to Leeds and Manchester. I chose Leeds because Professor Smith leads the module on Sustainable Supply Chains, which is vital for my career goals in manufacturing."

3. "What are the exact modules you will study?" The Trap:* If you cannot name at least 3 core modules from your course, the caseworker will assume you don't care about the academic side at all. You must memorize the syllabus before the call.

4. "How will you fund your studies, and what are your living costs?" The Trap:* If you say, "I have £20,000," but your bank statement shows £35,000 from your father, they will suspect you borrowed the money. Good Answer:* "My father is sponsoring me. He transferred £35,000. My tuition is £24,000, and I have budgeted £900 a month for rent in my student accommodation in Birmingham."

The Strategy: The caseworker has your CAS and your bank statements on their screen. They are simply checking if the human matches the paperwork. Spend two hours before the interview memorizing your university website, your module list, and the exact figures on your bank statement. Speak clearly, passionately about your subject, and treat it like a university entrance exam.
