The English Language Test (SELT): Which Exam is Actually Easiest?
The 10-Point Hurdle
To get a UK Student Visa, you need 70 points.
If you fail to prove your English proficiency to the exact standard required by the Home Office, you will be rejected, even if you have £1,000,000 in your bank account.
You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT). But which one is the best strategic choice?
The Big Three: IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL
UKVI approves several providers, but 95% of students take one of these three. They test Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Usually, for a UK degree, you need the equivalent of a B2 level (IELTS 6.0 or 6.5).1. IELTS for UKVI (The Gold Standard) Format:* Paper or Computer. The Speaking test is done face-to-face with a real human examiner. Pros:* Universally accepted by every UK university and UKVI. Cons:* Because the speaking and writing are marked by humans, it can be slightly subjective. If you get a grumpy examiner, your score might dip. It takes up to 13 days to get results.
2. PTE Academic UKVI (The Algorithmic Hack) Format:* 100% Computer-based. You speak into a microphone. Your writing is graded by an AI. Pros:* If you understand how AI grading works, this is mathematically the easiest test to pass. You can learn the algorithm's preferred sentence structures. Results are often delivered in 48 hours. Cons:* If you have a very thick accent, the voice recognition software can sometimes fail to understand you, tanking your speaking score unfairly.
3. TOEFL iBT (The American Import) Format:* 100% Computer-based. Pros:* Very popular globally. Cons:* The reading texts are notoriously dense and academic. Some UK universities prefer IELTS over TOEFL.
The "Higher Education Provider" Exemption
If you are studying at a standard degree level (Bachelor's or Master's) at a recognized UK university, the university can legally make their own assessment of your English. They might accept your high school English grades, or accept Duolingo English Test (which is much cheaper), and write on your CAS: "Higher Education Institution has made own assessment of English." If this is on your CAS, you DO NOT need to take an official UKVI IELTS test for the visa.
The Strategy: Do not book a £200 IELTS test until you have explicitly asked your university admissions team: "Will you accept my high school grades or the Duolingo test for the CAS English requirement?" If they say no, book the PTE Academic. The AI grading provides faster results and removes human bias, allowing you to secure your CAS weeks earlier.
Calculate Your Visa Points
