The Freshers' Fair Frenzy
It is Wednesday of Freshers' Week. You walk into the main sports hall. There are 150 stalls. Everyone is smiling, handing out free pizza, and demanding you sign up for their society.
In a panic of enthusiasm, you sign up for:
You just spent £110 of your maintenance loan in 45 minutes. By November, you realize you haven't been to a single Frisbee practice, and you can't afford the £600 Snowsports trip to the Alps.
Are societies a scam, or are they worth the investment?
The Three Tiers of Societies
To optimize your budget, you must categorize societies by their actual Return on Investment (ROI).1. The "CV Builders" (High ROI) These are academic or career-focused societies (e.g., Law Society, Investment Banking Club, Women in Engineering, Enactus). Cost:* Usually very cheap (£5 - £15). Value:* Massive. They host exclusive networking events with corporate recruiters. If you get on the "committee" (e.g., as Treasurer), it is the single strongest thing you can put on your CV to secure a graduate scheme. This is a mandatory investment.
2. The "Social Sanity" Clubs (Medium ROI) These are niche interest clubs (e.g., Board Game Society, Drama, specific cultural societies). Cost:* Moderate (£10 - £30). Value:* High for mental health. They are the easiest way to make friends outside of your messy housemates. Pick ONE and commit to it.
3. The "Elite Sports" Trap (Negative ROI) These are the massive athletic clubs (Rugby, Rowing, Snowsports). Cost:* Devastating. Beyond the £50 membership, you must pay for mandatory team kit (£80), travel to away games (£20 a week), and the mandatory weekly "sports night" drinking session (£40 a week). Value:* Great fun, but a financial black hole. Joining a major sports team will easily cost you £1,000+ over an academic year.
The Strategy: Do not hand over any cash during Freshers' Week. Most societies allow you to attend the first two sessions for free as a "taster." Go to the tasters. Wait two weeks. If you actually look forward to the third session, then you pay the membership. Use our Student Budget Planner to see if you can actually afford the hidden weekly costs of being on the rugby team.
