CAS Letters Explained: The Single Document That Guarantees UK Entry

The Golden Ticket

It is late July. You have an unconditional offer to study in the UK. You have paid your £3,000 tuition fee deposit. You have your bank statements ready for the 28-Day Rule.

You go to the UKVI website to apply for your visa. The very first question on the form stops you dead: "Please enter your CAS number."

You check your emails. You don't have a CAS number. You panic. You cannot proceed. Welcome to the most stressful waiting game in international education.

What is a CAS?

CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is not a physical piece of paper. It is a unique, 14-character alphanumeric code (e.g., E4G7Z123456789) generated by your UK university and lodged on the Home Office's secure digital database.

Under the UK's Points-Based Immigration System, you need exactly 70 points to get a Student Visa. Having a valid CAS number instantly gives you 50 of those 70 points. (The remaining 20 points come from proving your finances and English language skills).

Without a CAS, you legally do not exist to the UK Home Office.

Why is Your CAS Delayed?

Universities do not issue CAS numbers automatically. They are heavily audited by the UK Government. If a university issues a CAS to a fake student who disappears into the UK illegal economy, the university loses its sponsor license and is essentially shut down.

Therefore, the university will fiercely protect their CAS allocation. They will not issue your number until:

  • Your offer is 100% Unconditional (all academic and English conditions met).
  • You have paid the mandatory tuition fee deposit (usually £2,000 - £5,000).
  • You have passed their internal "Pre-CAS Interview" (to ensure you are a genuine student).
  • You have sent them a scan of the passport you will use to travel.
  • Because universities are processing 5,000 international students in August, it can take 3 to 4 weeks to receive your CAS after paying your deposit.

    The Pre-Payment Hack

The CAS is not just a reference number; it is a live ledger of your finances. If the CAS states your tuition fee is £20,000, and it states you have paid £0, UKVI requires you to prove you have £20,000 in your bank account.

The Hack: If you pay £15,000 toward your tuition before the CAS is issued, the university will print "Fees Paid: £15,000" directly on the electronic CAS. When the UKVI caseworker reads the CAS, they see you only owe £5,000. You now only need to show £5,000 in your bank account (plus living costs). The CAS legally overrides the bank statement requirement.

The Strategy: Do not book flights or stress about visa timelines until you have the 14-character code. Pay your tuition deposit as early as May. If it reaches mid-August and you still do not have your CAS, call the university's International Admissions team daily.

    Check Your Visa Points

Ensure your CAS gives you the mandatory 50 points required by the Home Office.
