How to Hack the Weighted GPA System to Guarantee Valedictorian

The Valedictorian Math Game

In American high schools, the title of Valedictorian is rarely awarded to the smartest student. It is awarded to the student who best understands the mathematical rules of the Weighted GPA system.

If your high school uses a weighted GPA system (where AP/IB classes are out of 5.0 and regular classes are out of 4.0), the game is rigged. Here is how top students mathematically manipulate their schedules to guarantee the #1 class rank.

Strategy 1: The "Drop the A" Method

Imagine two perfect students.
  • Student 1 takes five AP classes and gets all 'A's. Their GPA for the semester is a perfect 5.0.
  • Student 2 takes the exact same five AP classes and gets all 'A's. But they also decide to take Choir, which is an unweighted elective. They get an 'A' in Choir (worth 4.0).
  • When the school calculates Student 2's GPA, the 4.0 from Choir drags down the 5.0 average. Student 2's GPA is a 4.83.

By taking an extra class and getting a perfect 'A', Student 2 literally lowered their GPA and lost the Valedictorian spot to Student 1. To win the weighted GPA game, top students will strategically refuse to take unweighted electives, opting for "study hall" or early dismissal instead, simply to protect their 5.0 average.

Strategy 2: Summer School for Regular Classes

Top students know that state graduation requirements force them to take unweighted classes (like Health or P.E.).

To prevent these 4.0 classes from diluting their 5.0 weighted GPA during the academic year, elite students will take these mandatory classes over the summer at a community college or online.

By pushing the unweighted classes off the official high school semester transcript, they ensure that every class they take during the fall and spring is heavily weighted, mathematically skyrocketing their class rank.

    The College Admissions Reality Check

While playing the Valedictorian math game might win you a medal at graduation, elite colleges see right through it.

Admissions officers at Ivy League universities strip away your high school's unique weighting system and recalculate your GPA. They don't care if your school awarded you a 5.2. They look at the raw rigor of your schedule.

If they see that you skipped taking four years of a foreign language just to take an extra AP class to boost your weighted GPA, they will reject you for lacking academic depth. Play the weighted GPA game carefully.
