Can I Put High School Honor Roll on My College Resume?

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Freshman Resume Trap

You are a freshman in college applying for your very first summer internship.

You open up Microsoft Word to build your resume. You look at the "Education" section and realize it is completely empty. You have only been in college for three months. You have no college GPA yet.

To fill the white space, you type in your high school achievements: Valedictorian* Principal's Honor Roll (2022 - 2025)* National Honor Society President*

Is this acceptable?

The "One Year" Rule

The universal rule of corporate recruiting is that high school achievements have an expiration date.
  • Freshman Year: It is completely acceptable to list high school honors (Honor Roll, AP Scholar) on your resume. Employers know you are 18 years old and have no college data yet. They use your high school rigor to judge your work ethic.
  • Sophomore Year: You are entering the danger zone. By the fall of your sophomore year, your high school achievements must be completely purged from your resume.
  • The Psychology of the Recruiter

If a recruiter looks at the resume of a 20-year-old college junior and sees "High School Honor Roll," they instantly draw two devastating conclusions:
  • You peaked in high school. You haven't accomplished anything meaningful in the last three years, so you are relying on old glory.
  • You lack professional awareness. You do not understand standard business norms, which makes you a liability in a corporate office.
  • What to Use Instead

As soon as you finish your freshman year of college, you must replace the High School Honor Roll with college-level data.
  • Did you get a 3.5? Add the Dean's List.
  • Did you get a 4.0? Add the President's List.
  • No honors? Add a "Relevant Coursework" section listing the advanced classes you took.
  • The moment you step foot on campus for your sophomore year, your high school career ceases to exist. Delete it.
