The Invisible Veto
You are weeks away from college graduation. Your transcript is flawless. You have a 3.92 Cumulative GPA, easily qualifying you for Summa Cum Laude.
You receive your graduation packet in the mail, and your Latin Honors are missing. You run to the registrar, pointing at the 3.92 on your transcript. They shake their heads and point to a different office across campus: The Office of Academic Integrity.
Your GPA didn't fail you. Your behavior did.
The 'Good Standing' Clause
When students read the university bylaws for Latin Honors, they usually stop reading after the GPA cutoffs (e.g., 3.5 = Cum Laude). If you keep reading the fine print, almost every accredited university in the United States has a clause that looks exactly like this: "To receive Latin Honors, a student must meet the GPA requirements and be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university."
The Cheating Veto
During your sophomore year, you were overwhelmed. You copied code from GitHub for a Computer Science project. The professor caught you. You were brought before the honor board, failed the assignment, and placed on Academic Probation for one semester. You learned your lesson, never cheated again, and grinded your way back to a 3.92 GPA.
It doesn't matter. The university views Latin Honors as an endorsement of both your intellect and your character. If you have an Academic Integrity Violation (plagiarism, cheating, unauthorized collaboration) permanently lodged in your file, the Dean of Students holds the absolute right to veto your Latin Honors.
Does a Noise Violation Count?
What if you weren't caught cheating, but you were caught drinking in the dorms freshman year and got a "Conduct Violation"?Usually, minor behavioral infractions (noise complaints, dorm alcohol violations) will not strip your Latin Honors, provided you completed your disciplinary probation. The veto is almost exclusively reserved for crimes against the academic integrity of the institution (cheating) or severe Title IX violations. If you have a 3.9 and an honor board violation, you must appeal directly to the Dean months before graduation to beg for an exception.
