I Bombed My Pre-Reqs but Got an 85% on the TEAS. Will Nursing Schools Accept Me?

The Nursing School Hail Mary

Go to any student nursing forum, and you will see this exact panic post: "My Prerequisite GPA is a 2.8 because I failed Microbiology. But I just took the TEAS VI and scored an 88% (Advanced). Will the high test score save me?"

To understand if you have a chance, you have to understand how BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs actually process applications. They do not use holistic review. They use a strict, mathematical Point System.

How the Nursing Point System Works

Every nursing school publishes an admission rubric (a point matrix). Usually, it is out of 100 possible points.
  • Prerequisite GPA: Often accounts for 40 to 50 points.
  • TEAS Score: Often accounts for 40 to 50 points.
  • Bonus Points: Local county residency, previous healthcare experience, etc.
  • If you have a 4.0 GPA, you get all 50 GPA points. If you have a 2.8 GPA, you might only get 25 points.

    Can the TEAS Save You?

An 88% on the TEAS is an elite score (top 10% nationally). If the TEAS section of the rubric is worth 50 points, an 88% might secure you 44 out of 50 points.

    Let's do the math:

  • GPA Points (2.8): 25/50
  • TEAS Points (88%): 44/50
  • Total Score: 69/100 points.
  • The Brutal Reality

At highly competitive state nursing programs in California or Texas, the cutoff to get admitted is often 85/100 points.

In this scenario, even with a massive TEAS score, a 2.8 GPA will statistically lock you out. The math simply does not work.

The Strategy: You must retake the failed prerequisite. If you can drag your 2.8 up to a 3.3, your GPA points will jump from 25 to 38. Combined with your 44 TEAS points, your new score is 82/100, placing you right on the border of acceptance. A high TEAS score is a massive advantage, but it cannot completely erase a failing science grade.
